Once home to a variety of thriving commercial businesses — including the beloved Ford’s Pharmacy — the building at 69 Baltimore Street, now The Wills Hotel, stands as a remarkable example of historic preservation. Thoughtfully restored and reimagined, the property blends modern hospitality with the timeless architectural character that has defined this landmark for more than a century.
The Wills Hotel stands as a piece of living history — a landmark rooted in the rich story of Cumberland and thoughtfully restored for today’s traveler.
Constructed between 1866 and 1868, the building has witnessed generations of change while remaining a constant presence in the heart of the city. Over the decades, it housed a remarkable succession of owners and occupants, including J. Wilson Humbird, Kennedy Butler, Robert Shriver, the Pearres family, and Hervy Laney, each contributing to the building’s evolving legacy.
In 1880, the property was acquired by Robert Hall McCleave, becoming widely known as the McCleave Building. Under the McCleave family’s ownership, the building remained an important part of downtown Cumberland for nearly seventy years. In 1947, ownership passed to the Parisers, who opened a clothing store known as The Manhattan, further cementing the building’s place in the commercial and cultural fabric of the city.
As Cumberland continued to evolve through the twentieth century, the building changed hands several times, adapting alongside the community it served. Today, under the ownership of Brian Gilbride, the property has been thoughtfully reimagined as The Wills Hotel — a boutique destination that honors the craftsmanship, character, and stories embedded within its walls.
At The Wills Hotel, history is not simply preserved — it is experienced. Original architectural details, timeless design, and modern comforts come together to create a stay that feels both authentic and elevated. Whether you are visiting Cumberland for business, adventure, or a quiet escape, The Wills Hotel offers a connection to the city’s past while providing the comfort and hospitality of the present.
